The Harmony of the Spheres, is an installation Selected for Phase 2 submission, Burning Man 2020, in collaboration with Marya Kanakis, Tanil Raif, and Mario Serrano.
Inspired by Salvador Dali's work, the installation uses the desert as a surreal backdrop to explore imagined dimensions of life. The structure consists of vertical grids made of transparent nylon string frames and durable chromatic fabric balloons that are anchored to the ground for stability. Helium-filled reflective spheres are fastened to the frame, creating infinite unique reflections of reality. The balloons range in size from 22" diameter in their initial state and gradually deflate over time, transforming from a perfect cube to a playful mountain. The pavilion's shape and form change daily through human interaction and natural forces, with burners invited to explore and play within the floating field. Gradients in balloon density create openings that allow participants to enter the cube and encounter unexpected void spaces in the center for unexpected encounters and new realms of consciousness.
The installation questions reality through the repetition of visuals and reflection of oneself, while the ephemeral nature of the spheres changes over time, creating a visual array of changes in relation to time. Despite its imperfections, burners will embrace the Harmony of the Spheres as a new understanding of reality, space, and time beyond the limits of physical constraints and common exposure of materials, celebrating the profound desert and the holistic approach to designing an image in unison with it.
